NAKSHATRA BIRTHDAY - CELEBRATING THE VEDIC WAY

Today happens to be my star birthday that is according to the moon cycle or lunar cycle. The constellation or Nakshatra where the moon is present when you are born is called your Janma Nakshatra.

The Nakshatra or constellation plays an important role in determining the essential qualities of a person. Each Janma Nakshatra has a personality. It has some natural instincts, likes, dislikes and is adept to do some things better than others. Every Nakshatra has a deity & a planet associated with it. According to Vedic astrology, their are twenty seven Nakshatras or constellations corresponding to each of the twenty seven segments of the elliptical zodiac.

Mentioned below are the Nakshatras with their meanings:
  1. Ashwini - Horse like woman
  2. Bharani - bearer woman
  3. Krittika - cutting woman
  4. Rohini - red woman
  5. Mrigashirsha - head of deer

  8. Pushya - nourishing
  9. Ashlesha - the embracer
  10. Magha - the great one
  11. Purva Phalguni - former reddish one
  12. Uttara Phalguni - latter reddish one
  13. Hasta - hand
  14. Chitra - the bright one

  23. Dhanishta - the richest one
  24. Shatabhisaa - hundred healers

  27. Revati - the wealthy
So in simple words, your Star Birthday is the day you were born according to the hindu lunar calendar in a particular Nakshatra and Rashi. It is used for deriving your entire individual horoscope - your name syllable, horoscope matching etc. for all Pujas and Homas in Vedic tradition.

Today, on the occasion of my star birthday,  I wore new clothes and attended Ayush Homa in Gurukul at Bangalore Ashram. Ayush Homa is performed here everyday, to offer prayers to increase one's health & longevity. Along with the chantings we also honour Navagrahas or the nine planets and offer the sacred food grains and herbs associated with each planet into the sacrificial fire. It helps remove negativity and obstacles and brings harmony and peace in life.

It was a Samuhik or Collective Homa,  where all the people sharing the same star birthday collectively pray together. After Ayusha Homa, we all went to Ganesha temple nearby and also met Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ji and took his blessings. It was a blissful end to our beautiful morning celebrations.
